Nocturnal emissions: "old razor syndrome" edition

Feb. 5th, 2005 | 02:20 pm

Friday was bad. I got lots of phone calls when I was sleeping, and as a result wound up only getting about 4 hours of sleep before I got up for the evening. But with nothing of pressing importance to do, I fell back asleep around 10pm. I woke up today at 1pm (15 hours later!), feeling refreshed and rested for the first time in, well, at least a week.

I felt good. Really good. Have you ever had a dull, aching headache for so long that you forget you even have it? And then one day, you wake up, and you don't have the headache, and you're like, "Oh, sweet relief! What a terrible headache that I'd had for so long that the only way I was able to remember its existence was because of its sudden absence! Good riddance to you, headache!" Sort of like that.

Actually, it's more like putting a new razor cartridge on and using it for the first time. Shaving becomes effortless and - dare I say - fun again, and you ask yourself, "How did I ever shave with that old razor? How did I put up with the pain and irritation? How did I forget how good shaving can feel?" It's something I'm dubbing "old razor syndrome."

So I'm not nocturnal anymore. I like being rested, and I now understand that alternative sleep schedules are a poor substitute for things like self-discipline and time management. I miss seeing my friends, and getting things that have to get done between 8am and 5pm is a pain when you sleep when I did.

I also want to start looking forward to phone calls again, though of course they'll stop now that I'm awake to answer them.

So good riddance to being nocturnal. Being a human guinea pig was fun, but I suspect being a human will be better.
